5 Reasons Why I Love Broadway Shows

Picture
When I was a child my parents worked in New York City and loved the excitement and opportunities the “Big Apple” offered. We frequently made trips on the weekend into New York for the museums, restaurants and most importantly, Broadway shows. I was fortunate to be able to see many shows, mostly musicals, thanks to my parents love of the theater and this love has grown and continues into my adult life.

Broadway tickets are easy to come by. There is a booth in Times Square where you can buy cheap tickets for Broadway the day of the performance. I love this because you never know what show you are actually going to see. You go with one or two shows in mind and sometimes wind up seeing something unplanned but spectacular.

You can also purchase Broadway tickets ahead of time from websites or from the theater’s box office. If I am going to an established musical I buy the soundtrack and listen to it over and over again. Knowing the words to all the songs increases my enjoyment as I anticipate the performance of my favorite ones.

Another reason I love to go to see Broadway shows is that I love to dine out in the city. I research restaurant reviews to see where I will be dining. Sometimes the show will guide where I dine, as I try to find restaurants that fit into the theme or setting of each particular show.

Many popular movie and television stars are featured in Broadway shows. I love to see familiar faces in a different genre than I am used to. I also get a kick out of recognizing an actor in the Playbill that I recognize from some long ago sitcom or commercial.

The thing I love most about Broadway shows is that they sweep me away and remind me my childhood dreams of being a famous actress. For two hours I can forget about the normalness of my life and be swept up in the pageantry of Broadway. For a little while I am a child again, sitting next to my mom and dad, eyes wide, foot tapping, imaging myself up on that stage, dreaming of my speech as I accept my Tony (despite my tone deafness and two left feet) and although I lost my father a few years ago, when I see a Broadway show it is like he is right there next to me, tapping his own feet, dreaming of his Tony.
